Up coming workshops

Posted by bayan

Next month I have two planned workshops at my home studio. The first one is the crochet dolls workshop.
The second one is the sock pet workshop.
Feel free to e-mail me for more details, or if you would like to join my mailing list and receive details about upcoming workshops.
Here are some results from the pet workshop I conducted last week. It was a fun evening of creating with a wonderful bunch of participants. The photo shows three dogs and one cat named Mitzi, who has three heads (don't ask me why :-D).

Coming soon-Crochet workshop

Posted by bayan

Recently I have been busy getting ready for a new crochet workshop I will be conducting next month here in my new home studio. It required a lot of thinking and concentration on my part, since when I create my items; I just crochet freestyle, finding my way with the hook and stitches. I have a raw idea in my mind which comes to life loop by loop, and I don’t follow any patterns. Actually, it is not that simple. Many times it required countless unpicking until I got the form I wanted; a long trial and error process would perhaps be a better way to describe it. I have developed this process over the years, and came up with new ideas and techniques from doll to doll.
Many times I was asked to teach my own unique crocheting technique, I didn't feel confident enough to do so. But as I received more and more requests, I decided to give it a try. At first I made those trials by my own, and then asked a friend to be my guinea pig. I taught her my principles and it seemed like they were clear enough, she managed to come up with a crocheted head on her own, following my instructions. There still remain some issues like creating the workshop schedule and deciding on the number and duration of meetings, as well as some details about the process I have to plan, but  I will publish the invitation in the following few days.
Send me an e-mail if you'd like me to e-mail you when the invitation is done or if you'd like to join my mailing list, where I send updates about upcoming workshops.

Sock Pet

Posted by bayan

The new sock family became bored sitting all day long on my desk while I was busy with my own life, so they asked me if they could adopt a cat. I figured another creature wouldn't do any harm, so here it is - the new sock cat.

If you would like to learn how to create your own sock pet, you can join me on Friday, October 15, since I will be conducting a new sock pet workshop at my new home studio.
If you happen to be in this area, you are more than welcome to come!
Contact me for details or for subscribing to my mailing list to receive updates about upcoming workshops.

Sock dolls workshop and me in the Hand/Eye Magazine

Posted by bayan

Recently I have been busy with workshops I have conducted.
This Friday marked the second meeting of the sock doll workshop I conduct at my home studio.
During the last 18 months, I have been conducting this workshop once a month or once every two months; I already conducted so many of them, that I can’t even keep count…
Most of the time, those workshops group together women from various backgrounds and age groups. Not always – but most of the time – a very unique and interesting atmosphere is created while sewing the dolls.
Besides the many details being stitched to the dolls, there are so many details being conveyed via the conversations and chats around the table.
I don’t usually get to take photos, since most of the time I am too busy with instructing or chatting, and time just flies by. This time, I didn't so I can offer you a quick glance.
This pink creature was created by Smadar (gifted craft artist and owner of in-house after school program)
This is a boy, don't mistake to think it is a girl, Zufit (Polymer clay artist) who created him insisted it is a male thought the feminine lips he got.
Purple lady with one missing shoe, created by Yardena.
And this is the lovely creature made by noa brumberg, a fourth-year Visual Communications student, who is also the developer of theCraftomania-etsy toolbar.
It seems like there is a joke he is trying to tell us.

Now something else:
Last week I was featured in the HAND/EYE magazine.
I had not heard about the magazine before I was e-mailed and asked to answer a few questions. I was curious to find out about this magazine, so I looked it up.
Well, I discovered that it is a fascinating magazine that covers cultural, art and craft subjects, including interesting articles that feature fiber- and doll-art and artists.
Highly recommended!

Bird and Pink creature.

Posted by bayan

Lately I have been hooked on my new technique of creating dolls by wrapping strips of fabric scraps on top of each other.

I experimented quite a bit and created different shapes and creatures, but I wasn't really satisfied with any of them, until these two "came to life".

And here they are:

This pink creature is already one week old, and has been very patient since then,

Until this bird was completed today.

Finally there was someone to play with, and they had a lot of fun together

Next Friday I will hold another workshop for creating this type of dolls at my home.

E-mail me if you would like to participate, or if you would like to receive updates about future workshops.

Doll workshop and Happy new year

New Doll workshop in which I will teach new technique I have developed for creating dolls, creatures, balls and more by wrapping upcycled strips of fabric on top of each other.
You can see more about it here.
Besides that as I already wrote I have new mailing list for updates about my workshops, including workshops I conduct in other places and not always mention in this blog. Mail me if you would like to be included.

Wish you all very happy new year.

Digging in the trash

Posted by bayan

New group of scrap dolls and toys, made from fabric scraps I have collected on the streets of my neighborhood .
There are many sewing workshops in my neighborhood (as I have already mentioned in the past); actually, these are not exactly sewing workshops, but the workshops where fabrics are cut. I don't know where the clothes themselves are sewn, but I'm surprised that there is still some sort of textile industry here in Tel Aviv, where real estate prices have been steadily increasing, and companies keep transferring to China the few assembly lines that are still in operation here.Anyway, those workshops throw away dozens of huge scrap sacks every night. The hard work is to pick out only upcyclable scraps – those that come in reasonable sizes and nice colors (for some reason, most of the fabrics are black); otherwise, my house would be full of useless scraps.Workshops and classes I have to conduct always serve as a wonderful excuse for digging in the trash, playing with those scraps, and coming up with new characters and designs I would never think of otherwise. Creating this bunch of creatures was a long process, in which I had tried a few different techniques for dolls and other toys, until I came up with the idea of creating those.
The process of creating samples for workshops forces me to think about the all process of creating and what kind of experience would it be. It should be impressive but something that people will enjoy to make as well. It is difficult.
These creatures were made by wrapping strips of fabric on top of each other, so that besides the facial features, no sewing is required. There is no stuffing at all, since the shapes were created by the wrapping, and they are made of 100% upcycled fabrics. Using this technique, I had already created my marionette heads, and this time wished to use it for something new. Here are the results:

play balls can be created as well.
Wish me good luck tomorrow I am going to conduct this workshop.

Finally back

Posted by bayan

I don't even know where I should begin. This was a long break I took from my blog. I didn't plan it, and hoped to write earlier, but different things kept me busy and far away.
First it was Yom Kippur, the Jewish holiday which is also traditionally known as the holiest day of the year. Here in Tel Aviv, the holiest day of the year is also the Bicycle Day. Traffic stops for 24 hours, and the roads belong to cyclists. For that reason, it is my favorite day of the year.
Even though I caught the flu the day before, I didn't give up on riding on the highway, crossing the largest intersections, and even cycling hands-free! I was so proud of myself.
On the following day, Gal and I took a few days off and went to the desert.
When we came back, last weekend, I had to get ready for three very busy days of conducting huge workshops, in which I teach participants to create scrap creatures, like the one above.
I created these samples a while ago; they are made of fabric scraps, stuffed with smaller bits of fabric scraps, and stitched with longer scraps.Besides the facial features, no stitching is required, and thus it is fun for both parents and children to make together. I was explaining the technique hundreds of times, until I almost lost my voice (and totally lost my patience). When it was over, I was told that there were 800(much more than last time, when I was teaching how to create the marionettes) visitors per day at the ecological center where these workshops took place.

As I forgot to put my Etsy store on "vacation mode", I had orders to sew as soon as the workshops ended, and I was completely exhausted.
Finally, by tonight, everything was done, so I could take a breath and write this post...
